Migratory Bird Nesting Season in Full Swing

Migratory Bird Nesting Season in Full Swing

After a slow start this spring, migratory bird nesting season is recently underway! CORVUS recently conducted a wetland delineation in Arapahoe County last week and came across this black-billed magpie (Pica hudsonia) nest with eggs.

Fun facts: black-billed magpie makes a very large nest that can take up to 40 days to construct. They typically lay 1-9 eggs (clutch). Each egg being 1.2-1.5 inches long, and tan or olive-brown in color with variable amounts of dark brown speckles.

Historical records of the American West indicate that black-billed magpies have been associates of people for a long time. Magpies frequently followed Indigenous Peoples of the Plains while they hunted and fed on leftovers from animal kills. On their expedition, Lewis and Clark reported magpies boldly entering their tents to steal food
